General Guidelines
- For 2023 the Children, Youth & Commercial Music Categories will NOT progress to the National Rounds - these Categories are currently in review by the National Board - look for announcements for the 2024 Auditions season for possible changes coming!
- Auditions are held ONLINE ONLY. Teachers will submit videos of their students singing their Audition selections to live or recorded PIANO accompaniment. NO ORCHESTRAL ACCOMPANIMENTS ARE ELIGIBLE FOR USE. (exceptions are made for the Commercial Music Category ONLY).
- For COMMERCIAL MUSIC CATEGORIES:
- Commercial music includes all genres of vocal music performed by recording artists, not included in the classical and musical theatre NATS Student Auditions categories. Commercial music includes bluegrass, blues, contemporary Christian, country, folk, gospel, jazz, pop, rap, rock, rhythm and blues (R&B), soul, and all ethnic music, etc. Original compositions may also be performed in this category.
- Video/audio must only be recorded as if at a live audition with a single feed recording microphone. No looped vocals or double feed audio is acceptable.
- You MAY use a microphone when recording vocals (as if performing at an open mic night).
- You MAY record with a karaoke track (with no backing vocals) playing on a portable speaker or speaker system.
- You may be accompanied or self-accompany with a single instrument.
- No band set-ups or multiple live instruments can be used.
- Follow these VIDEO GUIDELINES when creating Audition Videos with your Students.
- Here are some Self Tape Do's and Don'ts
- IMPORTANT REMINDER: Nothing in your Student’s videos can identify who their teacher is or where they are attending School. Videos should be posted to your Student’s YouTube page - not the teachers - before loading the links into the Audition Registration System.
- Your student may submit videos for up to 2 Categories. Click here to find out which Category your students are eligible for and the Requirements for each Category, or scroll below for this information.

Q: I have students who don’t fit “traditional” Categories - what does this mean?
A: A few years ago NATS changed all voice Categories to be more inclusive. We offer Treble (soprano, mezzo, alto, contralto, countertenor) and TBB (tenor, baritone, bass). These are voice Categories and are unrelated to the gender identity of the student. Additionally, when submitting students to any of the categories, published transpositions are permitted. Singers are expected to retain the composer's intended style of music and to convey the essence of the character portrayed in the larger work.

A: Participation in the New England Regional Student Auditions is the first step in the process to be considered for the 2023 National NATS Student Auditions. Participation in the National Student Auditions is a great honor and a fun opportunity to network with other singers from around the Nation!
Students will receive constructive feedback from teachers about their singing and performing. It is always good to hear from more than just a primary teacher about the things students can improve upon as well as to hear that they are on the right track!
AWARDS! The 1st place finisher in the New England Regional Student Auditions in every category will receive a financial award. The amount is dependent on the number of registrants and will be announced along with the winners.
